The M&S surprise

Following my earlier post about Patricia Field forĀ  M & S, I chanced upon this article in today’s Guardian. Laura Barnett challenged M&S on their lack of clothes suitable for 20-somethings; she was pleasantly surprised when she shopped with Stuart Rose, M&S CEO. She found a number of suitable, fun items especially in the ‘Limited Collection’.

I was in M&S buying tights earlier this week and I had a quick look at their shoe section. I was pleasantly surprised, much like Ms Barnett, to find purple patent pumps nestled alongside grey suede shoe boots. And the M & S reputation for quality convinced me that these pumps might not immediately fall apart a la Topshop pumps. And the clothes were fun.

These are not just any shoes…these are M&S shoes.

  1. M&S shoes are wicked! I have been telling anyone who will listen this for ages. Take a trend, imagine the most perfect, wearable version of it, and [a big] M&S will probably have it. My friend Marisa had the most adorable ankle boots with bows on the back and I couldn’t believe they were M&S.

  2. M & S update: turns out they are even more amazing than previously thought. Their exciting range of shoes is surpassed by the cashmere jumpers for under 50 quid AND extensive inexpensive lingerie section.

This Friday is Wear it Pink Day and I have bought some pink M&S knickers to celebrate.

  3. Firstly, i am super proud my ankle boots have such a lasting impression and found their way into such a cool forum. I have to admit they are fantastic – as well as the brown lace up brogues with a small 1940s heel i recently got from Marks. Their shoes are the crowning jewel no doubt, as well of course as a fantastic advertising campaign with celebrates British fashion from the high street to high end with such iconic models. (If lilly and erin cant sell it, who the hell can?) Living in amsterdam I miss british fashion more than anything. I expected to fall into the gaping shopping void left by life without topshop but i have been suprised by how much i miss marks. Not only for posh ready meals and comfy knickers but for some great fashion. (although per una should be burnt but thats another issue…)

  4. When I am away I pine for M&S food. It’s been so cleverly marketed I now view it as an intrinsic part of my happiness and of a civilised place to live.

  5. I know what you mean about Per Una. I have also been taken in by the clever food marketing – I always think of M&S food as some sort of unattainable, aspirational ideal.

I’m wearing M & S tights right now – and they feel good.

  6. M&S have some bunker somewhere with material scientists formulating ever thicker and warmer tights for us tights-wearers to enjoy.
